CAGLIARI. The Sardinia Radio Telescope was opened yesterday in San Basilio, 35 kilometers from Cagliari (Sardinia - Italy), in a valley at 700 meters above sea level. As tall as a 20 floors building, heavy three thousand tons, is the second largest in the world.

The Sardinia Radio Telescope (Srt) is a large, fully steerable radio telescope. It is a collaboration among the Istituto di Radioastronomia di Bologna, the Cagliari Observatory (Cagliari) and the Arcetri Astrophysical Observatory (Florence).

The Srt with a diameter of 64 meters, is designed to accommodate several instruments with a frequency coverage from 0.30 GHz to 100 GHz. In addition to the radio astronomy science applications, this instrument will be used for deep space communication missions in conjunction with the Italian Space Agency, as well as for geodynamic studies. The configuration of the Sardinia radio telescope is a symmetrical shaped Gregorian system with an aperture diameter of 64 meters, and a 7.9 meters diameter subreflector.
